PLAN INSPIRES A NEW LOOK FOR DIVISION STREET
Input from the community has led to the development of a new
PLAN for Division Street. Following an
ANALYSIS process that helped clarify the community's ideas and concerns, plan areas were generated and refined in order to reflect community's hopes for the corridor. With a clearer picture of
what Division Street could become, Civic ArtWorks created an aerial view of the project area. This illustration shows what Division Street could look like if proposed changes became reality. Community members are encouraged to take a look at the images inspiring the illustration, examine the areas, and then continue providing feedback to guide the development of
A Vision for Division Street.
Main Street + Division Street Intersection
The intersection of Main Street and Divison Street is transformed to become a gateway into the Village. Buildings brought up to the street help create a sense of place while necessary parking is positioned in the back. A mix of uses encourages a vibrant atmosphere where pedestrians are encouraged to visit retail shops and other businesses. Residences are located above the ground floor and ensure a new vitality. New open space is created along Main Street in front of an existing commercial building and serves as the new home of the community's farmers' market. A landmark clock tower is a part of one of the buildings framing the park space. Oak Street is rebuilt as a pedestrian-only zone that allows people to connect directly to the adjacent War Memorial Park.

Lockport Street + Division Street Intersection
The strength, character and energy of the Lockport Street businesses and streetscape inspires similar development where the corridor intersects with Division Street. New multi-story, mixed-use buildings hold the southern two corners of the intersection. Arcaded sidewalks help create a safe environment for residents and shoppers as they walk along the street. At the southwest corner, a courtyard for outdoor seating and a small lawn for activities is lined by retail and restaurant / cafe entries. The potential for future library expansion coupled with the community's preference to shield surface parking lots along Division Street with cottages as a short term development solution, leads to the reorganization of existing surface parking lots.

Joliet Road + Division Street Intersection
Future expansion of the east corner of the intersection involves building up to the street to strengthen the character of the intersection. Parking is shared with adjacent, historic, single family homes that have been converted into viable businesses. A Route 66 monument is positioned within a park space at the southern point of the intersection and includes a visitors' center with a number of artifacts and promotional materials for the Village of Plainfield. A pergola wraps the edges of this triangular block, as well as in front of the surface parking lot across the street, in order to provide pedestrians a safe environment to walk along the park space. New commercial cottages next to existing businesses help shield parking on the west side of Division Street.
